Job title: Postdoctoral Training Fellow

Location: The Francis Crick Institute, Midland Road, London

Contract: Fixed-term (2 years), full time

Salary: Competitive with benefits, subject to skills and experience

  Vacancy ID: 9165

  Summary

An exciting opportunity to be part of a leading biomedical research institute, dedicated to innovation and science. A postdoctoral research post in the laboratory of Jonathan Stoye is now available. We are looking for a highly motivated researcher to use in vitro and/or mouse models, building on previous studies from the lab, to identify and characterize mechanisms controlling retrovirus expression and replication. The successful applicant will use a wide range of techniques from virology, immunology, molecular biology and genetics. For more information about this research, please visit the external lab website (https://www.crick.ac.uk/research/labs/jonathan-stoye) or make informal enquiries by email (jonathan.stoye@crick.ac.uk). The successful applicant will have good communication and organisational skills and a PhD in a relevant area (or be in the final stages of completion).

  Project scope

Based on the evidence provided by the study of endogenous proviruses (ERVs), retroviruses and their hosts have coexisted for hundreds of millions of years. During this time, host species have evolved a variety of mechanisms for controlling retrovirus replication and transmission. In turn, retroviruses have developed countermeasures to combat host defences. Our laboratory is interested in understanding these processes. In close collaboration with other laboratories within the Institute, we study examples of (a) host proteins that restrict exogenous retrovirus replication, (b) viral proteins that degrade host restriction factors and © factors that regulate the expression and growth of ERVs and the consequences of their expression from virological, structural and immunological standpoints.

  About us

The Francis Crick Institute is a biomedical discovery institute dedicated to understanding the fundamental biology underlying health and disease. Its work is helping to understand why disease develops and to translate discoveries into new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, infections, and neurodegenerative diseases.

An independent organisation, its founding partners are the Medical Research Council (MRC), Cancer Research UK, Wellcome, UCL (University College London), Imperial College London and King’s College London.

The Crick was formed in 2015, and in 2016 it moved into a new state-of-the-art building in central London which brings together 1500 scientists and support staff working collaboratively across disciplines, making it the biggest biomedical research facility under in one building in Europe.

The Francis Crick Institute will be world-class with a strong national role. Its distinctive vision for excellence includes commitments to collaboration; developing emerging talent and exporting it the rest of the UK; public engagement; and helping turn discoveries into treatments as quickly as possible to improve lives and strengthen the economy.
