Job description:
Postdoc Position (m/f/d)
code no. 2019/CS 2
The place of employment is Hamburg, Germany
The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht in Geesthacht, near Hamburg, and in Teltow, near Berlin, conducts materials and coastal research. You can find more information at www.hzg.de.
The Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS), a scientific organizational entity of Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, Centre for Materials and Coastal Research, invites applications for a Post Doctoral (m/f/d), starting as soon as possible, in the project CoastalCS@GERICS. This project is funded under the HZG I2B call. The position is limited to 36 month.
Coasts and oceans are important element of the Paris Agreement on climate change, the SDGs and many other societal goals. Sustaining system functioning and ecosystem services of rapidly urbanising coasts is a critical challenge in a warming world. The impacts of climate change are permanently affecting our relationship with the ocean at the coastal margin. Contemporary preference for adaptive management of the coast, and the use of area-based management tools such as ICZM, MSP and MPAs, still does not recognise and incorporate the impact of climate change. Climate services are one mechanism to advance creative and innovative transformation of ocean-climate data into decision-making. The overall objective of CoastalCS@GERICS is to define and develop the use of climate services in coastal urban settings including coastal cities. It will do this through the establishment and maturation of the foundation for coastal climate services through the analysis of coastal systems and its component parts, understanding the behaviour and changes of complex coastal system and generating spatially explicit, actionable information to develop coastal and ocean management, governance and adaptation strategies.
The position will focus on developing the conceptual and factual basis for coastal climate services including definitions, pathways, networks, guidelines, awareness, policies. It aims to establish the scientific basis for providing climate data and information relevant to the needs of coastal and ocean managers, decision- and policy-makers. The development of prototypical coastal climate services and toolbox approaches will be an important outcome.
The candidate must have a PhD preferably in Environmental Sciences, Geography, Ecological Economics or similar background. Experience with and participation in interdisciplinary and/transdisciplinary coastal projects, as well as experience with and knowledge of coastal systems (human and/or natural) is a requirement. The use of one or more than one of the following: participatory processes, stakeholder engagement, system dynamic modelling, modelling of ocean and coastal processes, ocean-climate modelling, geoinformatics and spatial modelling will provide a significant advantage to the candidate. The candidate will have at least five (5) years of experience in management of projects, have record of scientific publications in the intersection of science and use of science. The candidate should be highly motivated, pro-active, self-reliant, assertive, with an excellent time-management. Proficient in English and at least one other international language (German, Spanish and/or French would be of advantage) is a requirement. Since we are a German institution we support you to learn German.
