Position Description:
Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis, NCI is inviting qualified applications for a postdoctoral research position in the area of developmental therapeutics. The successful applicant will assume a major scientific part in a multidisciplinary project aimed at investigating the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in normal and pathologically altered tissues, and the role of aberrant signaling mediated by NADPH oxidases (NOXs) and dual oxidase 2 (Duox2) in inflammatory and oncologic diseases. As an essential part of this highly collaborative effort, the postdoctoral researcher will conduct a significant part of his/her work in close interaction with, and under a guidance of, the Center for Advanced Preclinical Research (CAPR) of the Center for Cancer Research, NCI; scientists in CAPR are experts in developing and employing a variety of genetically engineered disease models to understand mechanisms of disease. The specific project that the postdoctoral fellow will focus on involves understanding the role of cellular oxidative damage in the initiation/progression of gastrointestinal inflammation and carcinogenesis.
In the course of completing the proposed project, this postdoctoral researcher will have an opportunity to access and receive training in multiple state-of-the-art experimental resources and technologies, such as analyzing pre-clinical tissue specimens by various histology/histochemistry procedures, development of genetically engineered murine models for applicable diseases (e.g. pancreatic and colorectal cancer), handling patient-derived xenograft models, applying small animal imaging tools to monitor disease progression and therapeutic responses, as well as a broad collection of other tools for molecular and genetic analyses. This scientist will also work on optimizing the available disease in vivo models with a goal of subsequently applying them for informative preclinical drug development. He/she will also be able to access multiple research resources and scientific core facilities to advance the project and is anticipated to complete this study with one or more high-impact publications in peer review journals. This appointment will involve a substantial level of multi-disciplinary interaction and will require frequent coordination of efforts among several collaborating partners and scientific support cores.
Qualifications:
Ideal candidates will have a PhD degree in biochemistry, molecular/tumor biology, or related disciplines and preferably prior experience in developing of genetically and biologically engineered disease animal models for basic and translational research. Communication skills and the ability to collect, analyze, compile and communicate complex scientific data both verbally and in writing is an essential prerequisite for this position. Salary is commensurate with research experience and accomplishments.
To Apply:
Please send an application with resume/CV and support documentation to: Monika Sarna, administrative officer, Office of the Director, Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis, Room 3A44, Building 31, 31 Center Drive, National Cancer Institute, NIH, Bethesda, MD 20892; msarna@mail.nih.gov
This position is subject to a background investigation
The NIH is dedicated to building a diverse community in its training and employment programs.
DHHS, NIH AND NCI ARE EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYERS
