Job Description
A postdoctoral position supervised by Dr. Xuezhong Liu and his Co-investigator team at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, is available to work on the application of gene-/cell-/drug-based approaches to treat genetic deafness including Neurofibromatosis type II (NF2).
We are looking for outstanding scientists with laboratory experience holding a PhD, MD or equivalent degree in the fields of genetics, functional genomics, molecular biology, stem cell biology or related disciplines to join our laboratory as part of a project to identify genetic factors linked to deafness and develop therapeutic strategies for the treatment of hearing loss. These positions offers an unique and exciting opportunity to work as part of a multidisciplinary and collaborative team engaged in developing cutting-edge technologies to study deafness and inner ear development with direct application for treating hearing loss in humans. We have identified multiple new deafness genes in humans and are developing animal models and induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) lines to study the role that these genes play in the development of hearing loss. We are particularly interested in advancing novel biological approaches such as CRISPR-based gene therapy to treat hearing loss in genetic diseases in the following areas: 1) Development of genome editing or AAV based gene therapy to rescue hearing in the mouse models of human hearing loss; 2) Advance the study of using CRISPR to correct disease phenotype using iPS cells from human deafness patients; 3) preclinical studies in screening and testing the effectiveness of already FDA-approved drugs on mouse and human deafness gene-deficient cell lines and in animal models of human deafness; 4) Development of new delivery route for application of CRISPR in other inner ear cell types (supporting cells, stria vascularis and ganglion neurons) to treat hearing loss with different cellular origins. Candidates should be independent and highly motivated with strong communication and critical thinking skills, as well as a dedication to teamwork and collaboration. Candidates will utilize animal models, iPSC technology, and CRISPR genome editing, as such, experience in these technologies is desirable although not required. Other duties will include participating in project planning, grant and manuscript writing, and the mentoring of more junior members of the laboratory. Lead investigators for this project are Drs. Xuezhong Liu MD, PhD, Susan Blanton, PhD, Katherina Walz, PhD, and Derek Dykxhoorn, PhD. A successful candidate (Ph.D, M.D/Ph.D or MD) should have a strong background in molecular biology, animal or cell-based models of disease, genetics and genomics, and/or neuroscience. Experience in hearing loss or inner ear research would be beneficial but is not required.
Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D., M.D., or other doctoral-level degree in a related field of study. Possess a strong background in molecular biology, animal, or cell-based models of disease, genetics, and genomics, and/or neuroscience. Must be independent and highly motivated with strong communication and critical thinking skills, as well as a dedication to teamwork and collaboration.
UHealth-University of Miami Health System, South Florida's only university-based health system, provides leading-edge patient care powered by the ground breaking research and medical education at the Miller School of Medicine. As an academic medical center, we are proud to serve South Florida, Latin America and the Caribbean. Our physicians represent more than 100 specialties and sub-specialties, and have more than one million patient encounters each year. Our tradition of excellence has earned worldwide recognition for outstanding teaching, research and patient care. We're the challenge you've been looking for.
Patient safety is a top priority. As a result, during the Influenza ("the flu") season (September through April), the University of Miami School of Medicine requires all employees who provide ongoing services to patients, work in a location (all Hospitals and clinics) where patient care is provided, or work in patient care or clinical care areas, to have an annual influenza vaccination. Failure to meet this requirement will result in rescinding or termination of employment.
