Job Description
A postdoctoral position is available within the Division of Cardiology at the University of Iowa with Dr. William Thiel. Dr. Thiel’s research focuses on deciphering the mechanisms of cardiovascular disease development and progression using cell-targeting ligands (aptamers) and to develop novel treatments with these reagents. We are seeking highly motivated recent Ph.D. graduates to support two recently funded (NIH/NHLBI R01 and American Heart Association Innovative Project Award) projects: 1) Using vascular smooth muscle cell-specific aptamers to prevent vascular disease. 2) Translate aptamer technology towards of generating cardiac-specific ligands.
Dr. Thiel is a member of the Abboud Cardiovascular Research Center (ACRC). With almost 200 members, the ACRC mission includes on mentoring, collaboration and research towards all aspects of cardiovascular disease. Postdocs are a critical component of the University of Iowa research community and are offered excellent mentoring, funding and independence opportunities. Postdocs within Dr. Thiel’s laboratory also have opportunities that include:
• Highly translatable hypothesis-driven and technology-based research
• Entrepreneur opportunities to develop and patent intellectual property
• Support for new and independent projects that can lead to independence with potential monetary project support
