Job Title:Postdoctoral Fellow
Status: Regular Full Time
Benefits Eligible: Yes
Laboratory/Department: The laboratory of Professor Lois Smith is in the Ophthalmology Department at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children’s Hospital. The research interests in the Smith Lab focuses on diabetic retinopathy, retinopathy of prematurity, age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa and the mechanisms behind these diseases. The emphasis is on translational research. Many pathways found in the Smith lab have made it into clinical trials such as IGF-1 replacement in preterm infants and intravitreal anti-VEGF antibody injections in AMDpatients. Most current research efforts focus on the investigation of metabolic function of the retina and its role in retinopathies.
Position Description: 2 NIH-funded postdoctoral positions are immediately available and offer the opportunity to learn cutting-edge technologies and be on the forefront of medical research. Both positions will involve basic research techniques such as the use of disease mouse models, immunohistochemistry, western blotting, qRT-PCR, cloning, two-photon microscopy, confocal microscopy and other living imaging techniques. In addition, there will be many opportunities to collaborate with other labs both within Harvard Medical School and Boston Children’s Hospital, and the surrounding hospitals and research institutions such as the Broad Institute and MIT. Supported by a community of talented clinicians and researchers in the world’s largest pediatric research center, the position will help hone research skills, critical and interdisciplinary thinking, and scientific writing.
Candidates should have a PhD in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, immunology or biomedical sciences and previous experience with microscopy and image analysis in a biological context, i.e. neurobiology, developmental biology or molecular and cellular biology. Excellent communication skills with native level English speaking skills are required for the position since the projects involve close communication with industry and collaborators. We also look for highly motivated and focused applicants with evidence of scientific engagement and published papers in peer-reviewed journals. Due to the translational emphasis in our lab, applicants with a MD PhD are preferred.
Position 1: This position will focus on the investigation of retinal metabolism and its role in retinopathies and optic neuropathies such as glaucoma. More specifically we developed a non-invasive prototype to measure mitochondrial redox states in vivo. Measurements of mitochondrial redox states will be assessed in retina and optic nerve head in different diseases mouse models. The goal is to develop a metabolic mapping device for clinical use. This position will also involve the assessment of fundamentals of mitochondrial biology in the retina. Specifics for position 1: Fundamentalknowledge and hands on experience in assessing mitochondrial bioenergetics. Baseline knowledge in optics and spectroscopy. Experience in eye research is preferred.
Position 2: This position will involve focus on immune oncology. Specifics for position 2: Knowledge of tumor biology, immunology, hands-on experience with mouse tumor models, advanced understanding of transcriptomics including single cell sequencing and basic bioinformatics.
Application Instructions: Applicants should submit a cover letter detailing their research experiences and interests, a CV, a potential start date, and the full contact information of three references to SmithLabPostdocs@gmail.com
