            Scientist - Machine Learning for Lasers

            DESY is one of the world’s leading research centres for photon science, particle and astroparticle physics as well as accelerator physics. More than 2400 employees work at our two locations Hamburg and Zeuthen in science, technology and administration.

            DESY's laser science and technology group is responsible for research, development and operations of high power femtosecond and picosecond lasers related to particle accelerators and free electron lasers.

            We are seeking a highly motivated scientist for the Helmholtz International Laboratory HIR3X. Within the frame of the HIR3X project a close collaboration between SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in Stanford, USA, DESY in Hamburg, Germany, and the European XFEL in Schenefeld, Germany, will be established to improve the reliability, flexibility and repeatability of output parameters at the most advanced X-ray sources.

            The successful candidate will develop concepts to apply novel machine learning algorithms to optimize the performance of forefront ultrafast optical lasers, which are an essential and integral part of the X-ray Free-Electron Laser facilities.

            The position

              Develop advanced diagnostics and control schemes for photocathode and electron beam manipulation lasers using machine learning techniques

              Develop machine learning techniques both to analyze the impact of environmental fluctuations on the lasers and beam transport and counteract these effects through multi-parameter feedback

              Develop machine-learning approaches to quickly tune laser parameters between experiments

            Requirements

              PhD in physics, computer science, engineering or similar discipline

              Excellent knowledge of ultrafast laser technology and nonlinear optics

              Hands-on experience with application of machine learning methods

              Hands-on experience in ultrafast lasers and good programming skills

              Proven scientific track record
