Position SummaryThe Department of Forest Ecosystems and Society invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head. This Research Associate (Post Doc) position in the Still Lab at Oregon State University works on Earth system modeling of grassland function and biogeography. This position will work as part of a large, interdisciplinary team to implement and test a new, evolutionary approach to capturing grass functional diversity and biogeography in Earth system models. The approach, based on lineage functional types, will be based upon expansion of the grass trait database, additional data mining of existing literature on grass functional traits, and model development of processes important to grass modeling. The modeling work will be done in close collaboration with W.J. Riley at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and D.M. Griffith at NASA Ames Research Center.
Position Duties35% – Modeling: Develop and apply models to simulate global grassland ecology and function. 30% – Analysis: Evaluate modeled biogeochemical and plant physiological interactions and their effects on carbon and energy exchanges with the atmosphere. 35% – Publications: Author peer-reviewed journal articles and contribute to other related publications.
Minimum/Required QualificationsPhD in Environmental Science, Ecology, Earth System Science, Hydrology, or a related field. Expertise in land-surface modeling and knowledge of grassland ecology, hydrology, or biogeochemistry. Familiarity with phylogenetics and plant physiological processes. Strong numerical modeling skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated use of biogeochemical, ecological, or hydrological models. Ability to develop numerical representations of complex inter-related terrestrial ecosystem processes suitable for site, regional, and global scale models. Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver oral and written presentation of results. Record of publications. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with and/or lead others in projects.
Preferred (Special) QualificationsDemonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity. Interest in and ability to work well in small group settings. Interest in and experience in mentoring graduate and undergraduate students.
Working Conditions / Work ScheduleWork will primarily be in an office setting, but the Research Associate (Post Doc) will have the opportunity to join in some fieldwork collecting grass trait and spectral data in grasslands of the US Great Plains. Fieldwork involves long hours working outdoors in often hot weather.
