POST-DOC – SMALL RNA TRAFFICKING BETWEEN EUKARYOTIC ORGANISMS
Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences
Job Description
Department of
Plant Biology
A position as postdoc is available at the Department of Plant Biology, at SLU, Uppsala. The department has about 90 employees and is active within research areas focused on plant development, diversity and defense (www. slu.se/en/departments/plant-biology-forest-genetics). The Department belongs to the Uppsala BioCenter (www. bioc.slu.se), an excellent scientific environment combining competence in plant biology, forest mycology and pathology, microbiology, food science, chemistry and biotechnology. We offer state-of-the-art infrastructure, including modern plant growth facilities as well as equipment for bioimaging and molecular biology. The department is a member of the Linnean Centre for Plant Biology in Uppsala (www. lcpu.se), a platform for interactions between plant scientists at SLU and Uppsala University. The BioCenter has developed tight ties with the national SciLife Laboratory platforms in Uppsala and Stockholm (www. scilifelab.se) on various NGS analysis and bioinformatics.
Duties:
This project is about the potato- Phytophthora infestans interaction with emphasis on small RNA trafficking and identification of main target genes and their functions. The work is centered on biochemical and cellular analysis on predicted and prioritized gene candidates and associated processes with emphasis on potato. However, comparisons with Arabidopsis cannot be excluded. The work requires basic knowledge on bioinformatics, microscopy, plant defense mechanisms and gene functional analysis.
Qualifications:
Applicants should have a deep interest in plant molecular defense mechanisms and hold a PhD in molecular biology or related knowledge that the employer considers equivalent including skills in cell biology or RNA biology. Knowledge on bioinformatics, regulatory mechanisms or protein function are considered as merits.
Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities such as creativity, motivation and drive. Good knowledge of English in both speech and writing is a prerequisite. Candidates should also have an ability to conduct independent research, take initiative, ask pertinent scientific questions, and interact with other scientists. The latter is important since this work is part of a larger project on the function of small RNAs as intra and inter-organismal communication signal.
As postdoctoral appointments are career-developing positions for junior researchers, we are primarily looking for candidates with a doctoral degree that is three years old at most.
Place of work:
Uppsala
