Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Ref. R73724)

University of Exeter

College of Medicine & Health

The starting salary will be from £35,845 up to £38,017 on Grade F, depending on qualifications and experience.

This full time post is available immediately on a fixed term basis until 31 May 2023.

Summary of the role

The College wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the Complex Disease Epigenomics Group (see www.epigenomicslab.com for more information). We are a dynamic interdisciplinary team within the College of Medicine and Health researching gene regulation in common disease, with a growing team specifically focussed on understanding genomic mechanisms in dementia. We have been recently been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to investigate novel genomic pathways in people with Alzheimer’s disease who have experienced psychosis.

The successful applicant will work on a collaborative project that aims to primarily profile DNA modifications and gene expression to identify novel pathways involved in the development of psychosis in patients with Alzheimer’s disease. The role is computer based and the appointee will be involved in processing, quality checking and analysing genetic/epigenetic/transcriptomic datasets generated as part of this large genomic research study at the University of Exeter. The successful candidate will have a vast knowledge of statistical applications, experience in machine learning, bioinformatics, data management and programming (using R, Python or other languages) and be organised and a strong team-player. They will communicate their findings with relevant team members including the laboratory team and principal investigator. There will be scope to develop novel informatics pipelines further, to become involved with other bioinformatics projects, and to teach relevant skills to other team members. This post will be working remotely for a period of time due to the current COVID situation.

About you

The successful applicant will be able to develop research objectives and projects and contribute to the process of securing funds and make presentations at conferences and other events.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD and a publication record in genomics, bioinformatics, statistics or a related field of study. The successful applicant will possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to implement or develop novel methodologies. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively and mentor or supervise the work of others. Applicants will be able to work with large sample cohorts / data-sets with sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop novel methodologies. We ask within your application that you provide an overview of a key research output, such as a paper, analysis package or dataset that you have significantly contributed to, which is of relevance to the post.
