Post Doctoral Research Assistant (R220704)
Aston University
Description
Applications are invited to join our growing multidisciplinary and collaborative translational epilepsy research group. We are looking to appoint two outstanding research scientists with expertise in in vivo and in vitro electrophysiology to work alongside Professor Gavin Woodhall (PI) and Dr Sukhvir Wright (PI) in MRC and ERUK grant funded projects investigating synaptic and network mechanisms underlying temporal lobe and paediatric immune-mediated epilepsy. This cutting edge, translational research will aim to develop world-first epilepsy models and explore novel treatments. This approach directly addresses the unmet clinical need for rapid intervention in these epilepsies to improve long-term patient outcomes.
The successful applicant will be expected to perform neurosurgery and record ECoG in vivo , as well as in vitro electrophysiological studies (whole cell patch clamp, local field potential recordings). Knowledge of EEG analysis methods and programming (e.g. MATLAB) would be a bonus. There will also be an opportunity to develop behavioural skills in the field of cognition and memory testing. Appropriate training will be provided where required. With the aim to regularly disseminate high quality research findings, and presentations at local, national and international conferences, career development is an integral part of this role.
We are keen to attract highly motivated individuals with relevant in vivo electrophysiology experience and exceptional track records in this field. Applicants will have a PhD in a relevant neuroscience/biological discipline, we will consider early PhD graduates if the essential techniques of in vivo and in vitro electrophysiology formed an integral part of their doctoral training. A current UK Home Office Personal License (PIL) will be desirable.
Informal enquiries about the position and/or projects can be made to Prof Woodhall at: g.l.woodhall@aston.ac.uk.
