Post-Doctoral Researcher, Department Of Sociology And Criminology
University College Cork
Description
Post-Doctoral Researcher, Department of Sociology and Criminology
19 month, Fixed-Term, Whole-time Post
Position summary
We are seeking a Post-Doctoral researcher with an interest in gender and conflict to work as part of a team on the ‘Women of the Borderlands: A Walking Biographical Study of Women's Everyday Life on UK/Irish Border' project. Funded by the HEA North-South Research Programme, and led by Dr Theresa O'Keefe (UCC) and Dr Niall Gilmartin (UU) this two-year project explores how the border shaped the lives of women in communities along its hinterland during the Troubles and since the signing of the Good Friday Agreement. It will use in-depth ‘walking interviews' to investigate how women navigated and traversed the border on the island of Ireland as part of everyday life and the extent to which the border regulated women‘s lives. Some of the data collected for this project will be used to establish a public archive on women and border life.
This post is suitable for newly qualified Post-Doctoral Researchers and will be considered as a period of training as the researcher will have dual goals in terms of the research project and their own career development. This will be supported through mentorship by the Principal Investigators. The position will be formally based at UCC, but the researcher will be required to travel to identified areas along the border to conduct field work. The Post-Doctoral Researcher will work with the PIs to conduct innovative mobile interviews with women at various locations along the UK/Irish border, where research participants will undertake their typical journeys across the border, stopping at points of significance to talk and reflect. The data collection process will produce artefacts, which we anticipate will be of great cultural, social and political significance.
Candidates who are yet to defend their PhD thesis are also welcome to contact Dr. Theresa O'Keefe for informal enquiries.
