We have a reputation for international leadership and innovation, focused on developing new methods, whether experimental, analytical or computational. Our research spans the range from solid earth evolution to climate processes, and from 21st century resources to climate change impact.
This position is fully funded by the Australian Centre for Excellence in Antarctic Science (ACEAS), which is a major $25M Special Research Initiative of the Australian Research Council. The goal of ACEAS is to help the world community prepare for climate risks emerging from East Antarctica and the Southern Ocean by integrating knowledge of the ocean, atmosphere, cryosphere and ecosystems, and their interplay. ACEAS is a national-scale, University-led centre for excellence in Antarctic science focused on this goal. ACEAS is led by the University of Tasmania with a range of Australian and International Partners. The Australian National University is excited to be one of the partners in ACEAS.
The Position
The main responsibilities of the Postdoctoral/Research Fellow role include, but are not limited to:
Developing, validating and maintaining a finite element modelling framework for simulating Antarctic GIA, using automatic code generation techniques through the Firedrake research software infrastructure.
Computing a suite of diagnostics that can be compared to (or driven by) the observational record, including sea level.
Implementing different treatments of a visco-elastic rheology such that users can assess their impact on the solid Earth's response to modelled Antarctic deglaciation.
Assisting in training researchers and research students in the resulting research software infrastructure.
Exploring the applicability of using automatic-differentiation schemes for inverse problems in GIA.
The Person
To excel in this role, you will have:
A PhD (or awarding of a PhD within six months of appointment commencement) and/or equivalent postdoctoral experience in a relevant area (e.g., computer sciences, applied mathematics, computational geodynamics, or similar), as demonstrated by a record of quality publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations.
An emerging record of, and continuing commitment to, research that attracts international recognition in the fields of research software development, computational modelling and/or geodynamics.
Experience with finite element software development and validation in a scientific environment.
Experience with Python and High-Performance Computing.
Experience with Firedrake (or similar) and/or PETSc would be beneficial.
Experience with inverse problems would be beneficial.
The Australian National University is a world-leading institution and provides a range of lifestyle, financial and non-financial rewards and programs to support staff in maintaining a healthy work/life balance whilst encouraging success in reaching their full career potential.
