A new international unit at IPS/CAS is looking for most promising Chinese scientists.
4 good reasons to join Experimental bacteriology laboratory:
-Are you interested in culturomics (developed to culture and identify unknown bacteria that inhabit the human gut)?
-Are you interested to understand the stepwise construction of the intestinal microbiota in newborns and toddlers?
-Are you interested joining a new international unit at Institut Pasteur of Shanghai/Chinese Academy of Sciences?
-Are you interested by good job conditions and an attractive salary?
Whether you are either a Chinese early-career researcher (research assistant or post-doctoral fellow) or a middle or senior scientist (Research associate or Associate Professor), and you are ready to participate in this type of research, write to us to apply: 趙亮 Liang Zhao lzhao@ips.ac.cn and/or Jean-Marc Collard jean-marc.collard@ips.ac.cn.
Proficiencies we are looking for:
-using anaerobic chambers;
-cultivating fastidious anaerobes with relevance in human medicine;
-using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer to identify anaerobic bacteria;
-proceeding to (comparative) genomic analyses of newly-identified gut anaerobic bacteria;
Alternatively, a confirmed experience in enzymology bioprocessing microbiology or anaerobic digestion is also welcome.
The Experimental bacteriology laboratory (EBL) aims to decipher key ecological rules driving the maturation steps of the intestinal microbiota from the neonatal period to the age of 3 when it reaches its steady state. In a developmental perspective, EBL will identify constraints, environmental cues, and individual/collective dynamics driving the stepwise construction of the gut bacterial ecosystem. On this basis, EBL will address the dynamics of constitution of dysbiosis seen as a stalled maturation process with possible consequences on disease programming later in life.
To achieve these goals, EBL is developing an innovative combination of culturomics, metataxonomics and single cell analysis to deeply interrogate the construction of bacterial consortia and the resulting prokaryote-prokaryote episymbotic and exclusion events that support bacterial assembly.
EBL scientists work in close collaboration with other groups, developing microfluidic and organ-on-chip technologies, gnotobiology, omics and high-resolution photon microscopy.

The Experimental bacteriology laboratory is embedded in the Center for Microbes, Development and Health (CMDH) http://www.shanghaipasteur.cas.cn/CMDH/. The Center aims to decipher the mechanisms of non-communicable, post-modern, epidemics quickly emerging in Asia in response to fast economic development that accelerates transition from traditional life style to modern, globalised, life style (it addresses perinatal sepsis, atopy, asthma, obesity, diabetes, inflammatory bowel diseases, colorectal cancer…).
About the employer
The Institut Pasteur of Shanghai/Chinese Academy of Sciences and its Center for Microbes, Development and Health (CMDH) have excellent experimental facilities and access to the latest imaging, proteomics and genomics platforms on campus. A start-up package as well as a yearly research allowance for consumables is available to the laboratory and EBL and collaborating groups provide a dynamic research environment.
