Position Summary
With support from the Director of Admissions, the Deputy Director of Chinese Admissions is responsible for creating and implementing an undergraduate outreach and recruitment strategy for Chinese Gaokao students in the Greater China region and developing admissions policies and procedures for the NYU Shanghai Chinese application process, in alignment with university and departmental enrollment goals and objectives. Together with the Director of Admissions and other departmental leadership, the Deputy Director will provide leadership to a team of Admissions staff and oversee the operational aspects of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
The main responsibilities include:
Recruitment
● In partnership with the Associate Director of Chinese Admissions, develop and execute data-driven strategy for recruitment, outreach and yield to ensure Chinese Gaokao student enrollment goals are met;
● Improve and oversee targeted outreach programs within the Greater China region to establish and expand existing professional relationships with key high schools and work to enhance NYU Shanghai’s reputation among Chinese principals, year level leaders and class teachers;
● Continually identify and evaluate innovative approaches for effective Chinese outreach and recruitment;
● Oversee and support in-person and virtual Chinese admission events, whether on or off campus, including but not limited to candidate weekends, roadshow and community events, information sessions, and yield programming; lead team in planning and execution of all events;
● Ensure that all recruitment messaging and communications, including all forms of print and digital recruiting materials, presentations for in-person and online events and all other communication materials for prospective student populations align with university and campus wide branding and positioning strategy.
Selection and Evaluation
● Manage and lead the Chinese admissions application, evaluation and selection process for Chinese Gaokao applicants to NYU Shanghai, including, but not limited to, working with leadership to set appropriate reading assignments and deadlines, developing sophisticated and nuanced reading guidance for high school transcripts, managing the English language testing and interview process, leading the committee review process, and ensuring an effective and updated operational management system;
● Cultivate and maintain expertise in all matters related to national and local policies and regulations as they pertain to admissions of Chinese Gaokao students ensuring compliance with all relevant governmental regulations.
Administration
● Support hiring and onboarding of staff and provide ongoing training and staff development opportunities to promote long term professional growth and staff retention;
● Foster office culture of excellence in customer service, data-driven decision making, continuous improvement and cross-cultural fluency;
● Manage the NYU Shanghai Chinese Admissions budget; serve as an approving authority for all travel expenditure and outreach/recruitment initiatives;
● Closely collaborate with campus leadership and the Office of Financial Aid on the development and implementation of merit-based and need-based financial aid programming for Chinese Gaokao students;
● Improve data management and systems usage across all local and New York-based enrollment management divisions; ensure systems are developed and used in a way that best supports NYU Shanghai;
● Provide contextual and strategic admissions reports to enrollment management leadership and university leadership as needed;
● Ensure the successful transition of each incoming class from Admissions to Campus Life, and provide support for the first-year experience and other student success initiatives.
Communications and Relationship Building
● Cultivate and steward lasting positive relationships with students, parents, high school teachers and principals, relevant government authorities (including, but not limited to, the Chinese Ministry of Education, Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and local/regional education authorities across Greater China) and partner with colleagues in the Admissions team and across the organization to achieve departmental and university-wide goals;
● Serve as NYU Shanghai’s primary representative for all matters related to Chinese Gaokao admissions with all local and New York-based enrollment management divisions and to external constituents including, but not limited to, the Chinese university admissions community and other professional networks.
Qualifications
Required Education
● Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree preferred.
Required Experience
● Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in higher education admissions of Chinese Gaokao students or related areas, with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in a management role.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
● Possesses in-depth knowledge and understanding of the Chinese Gaokao students admissions process, including ongoing Gaokao developments in regions/provinces across the country;
● Chinese native speaker and strong written and verbal English skills;
● Able to effectively navigate complex multinational organization structure and lead multi-cultural team;
● Excellent interpersonal and team leadership skills;
● Possesses creative and flexible mindset;
● Proactive, initiative-taking and able to make data-driven, calculated risks;
● Passionate about higher education and promoting international education;
● Able to work under pressure and in an evolving regulatory environment.
