Research Fellow in Glioblastoma Treatment Response

University of Leeds

Description

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join an interdisciplinary team across the Faculties of Medicine and Biological Sciences. You will focus on using a 3D spheroid model of glioblastoma brain cancer to dissect the effect of modifying various molecules (using inhibitors and functional genomic approaches) on response to standard of treatment in this devastating disease. This will lead to prioritisation of those molecules for follow on research into mechanisms that confer treatment response, and how that knowledge can be exploited for patient benefit.

You will benefit from the expertise of molecular, cellular and computational biologists in the application of phenotypic (growth and cell viability) and molecular (phospho-proteomic signalling) assays to, and creation of large ‘omics datasets from, state-of-the-art patient derived in vitro models of glioblastoma. You will have the opportunity to use biopsies from patients undergoing surgery in ex vivo models to additionally test the effect of inhibitors or attempt to optimise gene knockdowns in tissue. This work is ongoing within the group, offering the opportunity to expand the preclinical models used in this current project and further investigate molecules that are candidates for conferring treatment resistance in this incurable cancer. Validating the role of target molecules in altering treatment response, and developing datasets with which to develop insights into the mechanisms of those roles, has the potentially to yield novel and more effective treatments for glioblastoma brain cancer.

You should have a PhD (or be close to completion) in biology or a closely allied discipline, with previous experience in brain cancer research and a track record in experimental approaches to manipulating target molecules and assessing response to both chemotherapeutics and radiation.
